Mitsui Sumitomo Trust Bank has started a proof-of-concept trial to tokenize beneficial interests in a British Cayman Islands-registered money market fund (MMF) and issue them on a public blockchain as digital securities.
According to Foresight News, the trial will treat MMF beneficial interests as “electronically recorded transferable securities representation rights, etc.” under Japan’s Financial Instruments and Exchange Act.
The bank is working with Securitize Japan and Fireblocks on the project and plans to complete the issuance within fiscal year 2026 after obtaining regulatory confirmation.
Looking ahead, the bank said it plans to use the trial’s experience to build an open platform with digital securities issuance and management functions. It also intends to explore use cases including instant delivery-versus-payment settlement with stablecoins, automated interest payments via smart contracts, and 24/7 cross-border trading.
