OpenAI's Vision for Low-Profit, High-Growth Infrastructure

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared insights at Stripe Sessions, expressing the company's ambition to become a 'low-profit, yet large-scale and fast-growing' infrastructure provider. According to Odaily, OpenAI aims to offer products akin to 'smart meters,' enabling users to automate businesses, develop products, or integrate into their services. Altman compared OpenAI's model to Stripe, highlighting a usage-based fee structure that benefits both Stripe and its users as the internet expands. Altman disclosed that OpenAI has secured 20-year contracts for power and land to support this vision. He acknowledged the low switching costs associated with AI, noting a recent trend of users migrating from competing programming tools to Codex, demonstrating that smarter AI facilitates easier platform transitions. While some companies might attempt to dominate the industry chain, OpenAI plans to focus on models and data centers as a cohesive unit, allowing other companies to build products on this foundation. Altman emphasized that businesses should not overestimate AI's impact on existing structures. Despite AI altering many processes, quality products will continue to thrive in the market. He specifically praised Shopify CEO Toby Lütke as the best AI adopter he has encountered.
