Four-Hour Block Halt Triggers Outage Fears

Zcash appeared to have suddenly gone off the radar this week after the privacy-focused blockchain went more than four hours without producing a new block, triggering fears of a major network outage and leaving transactions stuck without confirmation.

The disruption marked a dramatic departure from Zcash's normal 2.5-minute block production schedule, with block explorers showing no new blocks being mined for hours. As reports of the halt spread across social media, users questioned whether the network had suffered a complete collapse or was it just a technical breakdown.

Developers later revealed that the temporary black was actually an emergency kill switch that was triggered after a critical vulnerability was discovered inside Orchard, Zcash's latest shielded transaction pool.

The four-hour interruption meant that Zcash missed out on roughly 96 missing blocks, based on the network's normal production schedule. The sudden black out also left thousands of transactions waiting in the mempool and others unable to receive the confirmations needed to process deposits and withdrawals.

The uncertainty fueled speculation that the network had suffered a serious consensus failure, mining coordination issue or other critical malfunction. The ZEC token also came under pressure as concerns spread. The cryptocurrency briefly fell below $600 after reaching an intraday high of $637 before recovering later.

Emergency Upgrade Causes Temporary Instability

The But Zcash Foundation later revealed that it was more than a conventional outage, revealing that they had discovered a critical vulnerability affecting Orchard's zero-knowledge proof circuit during an ongoing security audit.

This flaw could have allowed invalid state transitions within the shielded pool, creating potential risks to the integrity of Orchard transactions. While there was no evidence that the vulnerability had been exploited, developers decided to act before any attacker could take advantage of the issue.

The Foundation said no unauthorized value creation was detected, user funds remained secure and privacy protections were never compromised. To contain the risk, developers launched an emergency two-stage upgrade that temporarily disabled Orchard transactions while a permanent fix was prepared.

The fix was carried out through a two-step emergency upgrade. Zebra 4.5.3, temporarily disabled Orchard actions to prevent any possible exploitation of the bug, while Zebra 5.0.0 activated the NU6.2 network upgrade and restored Orchard functionality using a corrected zero-knowledge proof circuit.

Zcash Open Development Lab contributor Tatyana said the network experienced a brief period of instability as miners and infrastructure providers scramble to upgrade and synchronize with the new consensus rules.

Zcash's Sudden Kill Switch Leaves Community Baffled

The incident sparked debate over whether the network had truly suffered an outage.

Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz argued that Zcash was "not down" and suggested some explorers were connected to faulty or outdated nodes. Other community members similarly claimed that the issue was primarily an infrastructure synchronization problem rather than a complete network failure.

Others disagreed, pointing out that block production effectively stopped for hours while developers carried out emergency repairs.

Regardless of the technical definition, the incident highlighted how a vulnerability in a blockchain's core privacy infrastructure can require rapid coordination across miners, exchanges, validators and node operators even when no user funds are lost.

The episode ultimately ended without any confirmed exploitation of the vulnerability, but it served as a reminder that even privacy-focused networks with mature infrastructure can face moments where security concerns take priority over uninterrupted operation.
