Western Union has officially stepped into the stablecoin arena, launching its US dollar-pegged USDPT on Solana in a move that signals a major shift from traditional remittance rails to blockchain-based settlement.

The rollout begins in Bolivia and the Philippines—two high-volume remittance corridors with a combined population of roughly 130 million—with the Western Union aiming to expand to more than 40 more countries in 2026.

The stablecoin is issued by Anchorage Digital, while Fireblocks provides the underlying wallet and settlement infrastructure. Western Union framed the launch as part of a broader transformation in global payments, where regulated digital assets are increasingly becoming foundational rather than experimental.

From Legacy Rails to Onchain Settlement

The USDPT rollout marks a clear strategic pivot. For decades, Western Union dominated cross-border transfers through cash-based networks. Now, it is repositioning itself for a future where onchain settlement, faster transfers, and lower costs define competitiveness.

The company plans to integrate USDPT with licensed crypto exchanges and plug it directly into its global liquidity network, effectively bridging fiat and blockchain systems at scale.

Western Union’s move comes amid intensifying competition following the passage of the GENIUS Act, which has unlocked regulatory clarity for digital dollar adoption.

Rivals are already moving. MoneyGram has rolled out USDC services in Colombia, while Zelle is preparing stablecoin-powered cross-border transfers. What was once experimental is quickly becoming a full-scale industry shift.

With the stablecoin market already valued at over $300 billion—and projected by institutions like Citigroup to surpass $2 trillion by 2030—the race to control global payment rails is accelerating.

Untapped Markets, Massive Opportunity

Industry observers say the real prize lies in underserved remittance corridors. Regions across Latin America and Southeast Asia—where banking access is limited but mobile adoption is high—represent billions in potential flow now opening to crypto rails.

Western Union, which serves more than 150 million customers across over 190 countries, is uniquely positioned to capitalize on that shift. By layering stablecoins on top of its existing network, the company is effectively turning its legacy infrastructure into a global onchain distribution engine.
