The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) announced the capture of a significant electricity theft mastermind in Taiwan, responsible for orchestrating a sophisticated operation involving meter tampering, resulting in substantial losses for the Taiwan Power Company.
The investigation, initiated in 2022, uncovered a network of electricity theft groups operating in Taipei, New Taipei City, and southern Taiwan. Cooperation with Taiwan Power Company revealed widespread tampering and seal breakage on meters, leading to inaccurate metering and substantial revenue loss.

The theft of over 13.23 million kilowatt-hours of electricity resulted in losses exceeding $40 million for Taiwan Power Company. Despite amendments to the Electricity Act limiting recovery to one year's fees, authorities seized altered meters and mining rigs, leading to the apprehension of Tu and 17 accomplices.
The CIB emphasized the risks associated with electricity theft, including overloaded circuits and fires, posing dangers to lives and property.
