An image of Temu's 57,000 sq. Ft. Warehouse on fire was uploaded on X, claiming that the company had incurred a total loss of inventory worth nearly $56.19 USD.
The social media was posted by someone with the account handle of Thrilla the Gorilla, and the post amassed a total of 7 million views and 13k reposts.
The post came with a image depicting a single-storey industrial building engulfed in fire. The name Temu was also written on the walls on the building, making many believe that this image was an authentic photograph taken on the scene.
Turns out to be just a joke
But it turns out that this post was just a joke. Thrilla the Gorilla, clarified in their bio that "This entire account is 100% fiction except for the parts that aren't. Don't take anything I say seriously."
Not long after, another account with the name handle Norris Cole posted the same image. The only difference was the amount of losses was changed to $53.29.
Norris Cole also claims that all of his posts are satire adn sarcasm, as per its bio. But aside from the inconsistency in the information in the post, another giveaway that these posts are fake is the Grok watermark at the bottom right corner of the image.
Grok is X or Twitter's own chatbot used for generating AI content. Thus, the image of the supposed chinese warehouse in these two tweets is AI-generated and fake.
More telltale signs of it being fake
Others have also spotted that despite having the Temu Logo written on the side of the building, but the logo seen next to the letters seems out of place.
In the original logo, there are four icons depicting a dress, a rocking pony, a stiletto, and a shopping bag. But in the viral picture, it appears to have a distorted amalgamation of the icons.
Furthermore, there is also a TEHU written in a smaller font next to the company name.
All these telltale signs confirm netizen's suspicion that his image is a fraud. Upon running the image through an AI checker for further confirmation confirms that it was indeed an AI generated photo.
