Stricter Regulations and Authorisation Process

Under regulations from the Indonesian Commodity Futures Trading Supervisory Agency (Bappebti), crypto exchanges must seek authorization to operate. 'Prospective crypto exchanges,' operating since 2014, must undergo stringent checks and registrations with self-regulatory organisations like the CFX. Robby Bun, chairman of Aspakrindo, the country’s crypto asset trade association, highlights that a crypto exchange licence is contingent upon meeting all requirements set by regulators.

The Deadline and Compliance Mandate

Prospective exchanges face an August 17, 2024 deadline for registration. Failure to comply will result in an inability to operate within Indonesia. Subani, chairman of CFX, emphasises the meticulous monitoring of transactions within these exchanges as part of the transition towards full recognition.

CFX registration serves as a means for the government to monitor crypto transactions for taxation. Future shifts in regulation, particularly a 2025 overhaul transferring regulatory control to the Financial Services Authority, could redefine crypto as securities.
