Colombia Eyes Bitcoin Mining Boom on Caribbean Coast with 75% Renewable Energy

Colombia’s president Gustavo Petro has unveiled an ambitious vision to transform the country’s Caribbean coast into a major Bitcoin mining hub, leveraging its 75% renewable electricity mix to position Colombia alongside emerging global mining leaders.

Petro pointed to coastal cities such as Barranquilla, Santa Marta, and Riohacha as prime locations for mining infrastructure. The proposal goes beyond industrial development, suggesting that the Wayúu community could take on co-ownership roles, embedding local participation into what could become a transformative economic project.

At the core of the plan is Colombia’s significant clean energy surplus. According to global benchmarks, the country generates roughly twice the global average of renewable electricity, creating an opportunity to convert otherwise underutilized energy into economic output.

By channeling this excess capacity into Bitcoin mining, Petro is effectively pitching a model that turns energy into digital revenue streams while avoiding the environmental concerns tied to fossil fuel-powered mining.

The strategy draws clear inspiration from Paraguay, which has rapidly emerged as the world’s fourth-largest Bitcoin mining nation, accounting for approximately 4.3% of global hashrate.

That rise has been largely fueled by the country’s access to cheap hydroelectric power from the Itaipu Dam. As major mining operators in the United States increasingly pivot toward higher-margin sectors such as artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, analysts believe a gap is opening for emerging markets with low-cost renewable energy to capture a larger share of global mining activity.

Industry voices, including Hashlabs managing partner Jaran Mellerud, have emphasized that Bitcoin mining can offer a compelling pathway for developing economies to monetize stranded or excess energy. Rather than letting surplus electricity go to waste, countries can convert it into consistent cash flow, potentially boosting GDP without significantly increasing emissions.

However, the timing of Petro’s proposal adds a layer of uncertainty. His presidential term is set to end in August 2026, leaving a narrow window to advance the initiative. The upcoming election is expected to bring leadership changes, with figures such as Iván Cepeda Castro and Abelardo de la Espriella emerging as leading contenders.

Neither has outlined a clear stance on Bitcoin or digital assets, raising questions about whether the plan will survive beyond Petro’s administration.

If realized, Colombia’s push could mark a significant shift in the global mining landscape, positioning the country as a renewable-powered alternative to traditional mining hubs and reinforcing the growing link between clean energy and crypto infrastructure.
