AI Deepfakes Turn OnlyFans Creators Into Tools for Online Scams
Criminals are increasingly using AI-generated deepfakes to impersonate OnlyFans creators, tricking fans into sending money for fake exclusive content before disappearing without a trace.
The scams rely on stolen images, cloned voices and fake social media accounts, leaving both followers and the creators themselves dealing with the fallout.
The fraud typically begins on platforms such as TikTok, where scammers upload videos made from real creators' photos combined with AI-generated voices.
These fake accounts encourage viewers to continue the conversation through direct messages on apps such as Snapchat, where they are promised private chats or exclusive content in exchange for payment.
How The Scam Pulls Victims In
The scheme follows a familiar catfishing pattern, with criminals pretending to be real content creators to build trust before asking for money.
Victims are instructed to send payments through Cash App, a peer-to-peer payment service designed for quick transfers between individuals rather than commercial purchases.
Because transactions are processed almost instantly, recovering the money after it has been sent is extremely difficult.
Once payment is received, the scammers block the victim and abandon the account, leaving no content and no way to recover the funds.
Malwarebytes described the tactic as a form of catfishing in which attackers impersonate someone online for financial gain using romantic or sexual interactions as bait.
The report said,
"They’ll use that to nudge viewers into a direct message conversation on services like Snapchat.”
Creators Are Paying The Price Too
The scams are affecting more than the fans who lose money.
The creators whose identities are stolen also face financial losses, damaged reputations and, in some cases, personal safety concerns.
Malwarebytes noted that creators lose income from genuine subscribers while also facing complaints from followers who wrongly believe they were cheated.
OnlyFans creator Jessieanna Campbell told USA Today that she regularly receives angry messages from people convinced she accepted their money before blocking them.
She said,
"I get messages all the time, like, 'Hey, why did you take my $150 and block me?' and I'm like, 'What are you talking about?”
USA Today also reported that another creator experienced angry fans turning up at her home after being deceived by impersonators.
The incidents have left her feeling unsafe and sometimes afraid to leave the house.
Why Laws Have Struggled To Stop The Problem
Governments have introduced new rules to tackle AI-generated explicit content, but enforcement remains difficult.
The Take It Down Act in the United States makes the distribution of non-consensual explicit content, including AI-generated material, a criminal offence and requires platforms to remove such content quickly.
Meanwhile, the European Union's AI Act requires users to disclose when AI-generated images are used.
Despite those measures, the scams continue because much of the stolen content is hosted on servers outside the countries where the laws apply, limiting authorities' ability to take action.
Researchers at the University of Bristol also found another challenge.
In three experiments conducted during 2026, most participants continued to rely on deepfake content even after being told it was fake, suggesting awareness alone may not be enough to prevent deception.
Spotting The Warning Signs
Some creators have begun hiring private content removal services or publishing public warnings to help followers identify fake accounts.
Malwarebytes said fans should be cautious if a creator contacts them through an unrelated social media platform and quickly asks them to move into private messaging before requesting payment.
USA Today pointed to one fake TikTok video impersonating creator Elaina St. James, created by animating a still image and cloning her voice.
The deepfake showed visible flaws, including distorted teeth and frozen eyebrows, imperfections that can reveal AI-generated video.
Experts recommend confirming any requests for payments or exclusive content through a creator's verified accounts before sending money.
If someone asks for an upfront Cash App payment through an unofficial account, it should be treated as a major warning sign.
