Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has not shown support for the metaverse and Web 3.0 ecosystem because he believes these terms are being used as buzzwords and marketing ploys.
In an interview with "The Babylon Bee", when asked about his thoughts on the metaverse ecosystem, Musk said: "I don't see anyone sticking a goddamn screen to their face all day. I don't know myself. Is it necessary to accept this thing called the Metaverse, even though people talk to me about it a lot.”
Talking about the metaverse and virtual reality (VR), Musk said he doesn't see a future where he has to leave the physical world and live in a virtual world. Sharing a personal experience, he added that VR headsets tend to induce motion sickness when playing video games.
"In the long run, a sophisticated Neuralink could get you fully into virtual reality. I think we're so far away from disappearing into the metaverse that it just sounds like a buzzword."
Musk founded Neuralink, a neurotechnology company whose main purpose is to implant brain implants in humans to restore and enhance physical capabilities through computers.
"I can't currently see a compelling metaverse, or Web 3 sounds more like marketing than reality. I don't get it, maybe I will, but I don't get it right now."
Musk also emphasized that people won't like walking around with a VR headset and don't want to leave it. He also recalls growing up being told not to sit too close to the TV:
"It's going to ruin your eyesight, right? And now our TVs are literally here (in the face). What am I thinking? Is it good for you?"
As the most influential supporter of Dogecoin (DOGE), Musk recently expressed support for the cryptocurrency, saying it is indestructible and fundamentally designed to reduce the power of central governments. As reported by Cointelegraph, Musk said at the Code Conference in California:
"It is impossible to destroy cryptocurrencies, but it is possible for governments to slow down their development".
He also suggested that the U.S. government "do nothing" when asked about his thoughts on cryptocurrency regulation.
