Yesterday, South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Upbit suffered a hacker attack, resulting in the theft of virtual assets worth 44.5 billion won. Yonhap News Agency, citing information and communication technology (ICT) industry sources and relevant South Korean government departments, reported that authorities are conducting an on-site investigation of Upbit, given the strong suspicion that the Lazarus Group, a hacker group affiliated with the North Korean Reconnaissance General Bureau, was involved in the 2019 theft of 58 billion won worth of Ethereum from Upbit. A government official stated, "This attack is unlikely to have targeted the server; it's more probable that the administrator's account was stolen, or that someone impersonated an administrator to transfer funds." The official added, "Based on the information we have so far, the hackers used the same method to carry out the attack six years ago, so we speculate that this is the same modus operandi."
