The presidents of the European Parliament, Council and Commission have signed a joint agreement outlining priorities ahead of the next European elections in 2024. Central bank digital currencies are included on the list of 164 pieces of legislation. The ECB is working with a number of partners on a prototype design phase that will end in March 2023, followed by a decision in October on whether to implement a euro CBDC. Additionally, the European Commission has promised to enact legislation on a digital euro "soon". A spokesperson confirmed the committee plans to present a proposal in the second quarter of 2023. The EU's anti-money laundering package is also on the priority list. Anti-money laundering regulations are being negotiated among policymakers in the European Parliament. Discussions have included decentralized finance, DAOs, and NFTs. An EU-wide anti-money laundering agency is expected to oversee regulations, including oversight of cryptocurrency companies.
