El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele announced that he had added 21 Bitcoins to his holdings today to celebrate Bitcoin Day. According to the Salvadoran Ministry of Finance website, El Salvador currently holds 6,312.18 Bitcoins, valued at over $700 million. Yesterday marked the fourth anniversary of Bitcoin becoming legal tender in El Salvador. On September 7, 2021, El Salvador officially became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. President Nayib Bukele pushed for the passage of the Bitcoin Law by the Salvadoran Congress in June 2021, which stipulates that Bitcoin can be used to pay for goods, services, and taxes, placing it on par with the US dollar as legal tender. The Salvadoran government subsequently launched Chivo, a digital wallet that allows citizens to store and use Bitcoin, offering a $30 Bitcoin reward to registered users. Bitcoin ATMs have also been deployed nationwide to facilitate transactions.
