A 25-year-old Japanese man, Ryuki Hayashi, was found guilty of using generative AI to create a computer virus. He was sentenced to three years in prison, suspended for four years, according to a Tokyo District Court ruling. Prosecutors had asked for a four-year prison sentence. This may be the first time someone has been found guilty of abusing generative AI in Japan.
According to the verdict and other sources, around March 31, 2023, Ryuki Hayashi created a ransomware-like virus using computers and smartphones at his home in Kawasaki. He created the virus using illegal computer program source code obtained through AI. (Jin Shi)
