Bluesky Releases App Password, a Short-Term Authentication Solution

Bluesky, a decentralized social project funded by Twitter, has announced the release of App Password, a short-lived authentication solution that lets users try out new clients without fully trusting their passwords. In the long term, Bluesky plans to implement SSO (single sign-on) with scoped permissions. The Bluesky core development team is currently focused on finalizing the AT protocol, and in early March, Bluesky stated that the priorities for the coming months are domain names as usernames and account portability, composable auditing and reputation systems, algorithm selection, and custom feeds. In October 2022, Bluesky announced to rename the protocol from "ADX" to "Authenticated Transport Protocol" (AT protocol). AT Protocol is a new federated social network that is run by many sites, users can choose between providers, and individuals or businesses can choose to self-host. The socially focused Bluesky App will be built on the AT protocol.
