According to ChainCatcher citing Bloomingbit, Blockstream said in its third-quarter business update that Bitcoin could prepare for future quantum-computer attacks by adopting new digital signature technology. The company’s team compared three lattice-based schemes: Dilithium, Falcon, and Hawk.
Researchers said Falcon-1024 offers the best balance of data size, verification speed, and maturity of its security foundations. They said it would be their choice if Bitcoin needed a lattice-based signature scheme today. Key challenges include finalizing the Falcon standard, developing verified implementations, and managing the memory demands on hardware wallets. The team described hash-based signatures as a more conservative near-term option and said the two approaches could be combined once Falcon’s standards and implementation technology mature, potentially improving security and processing efficiency.
