Airbnb disclosed Thursday that it had reached an agreement allowing it to invest in a new AI startup controlled by founder and CEO Brian Chesky and license its technology. According to Sina Finance, citing Bloomberg, Chesky’s plan to start a new company was reported in June. A person familiar with his plans said Chesky has funded the AI lab himself so far and intends to continue investing his own money. Airbnb’s chief technology officer, Ahmad Al-Dahle, who joined the company in January after leading some of Meta’s AI work, is an adviser to the startup. Securities filings show that Chesky holds a controlling stake and Al-Dahle also owns shares; the filings say their startup roles will not change their responsibilities at Airbnb. The company is registered in California as Kaboodle Labs, though a person familiar with the matter said that name is temporary. Airbnb also said the startup paid $7.1 million in cash for some of its intellectual property and will reimburse some related expenses. The filings do not specify what intellectual property was acquired. The startup may seek outside investment in the future, given the substantial funding needs of AI companies.
