Bitcoin Miners Disclose AI Data Center Cost Risks as Cipher Takes on $359.3M Overrun and Riot Plans GMP Contracts

Several Bitcoin miners reported cost risks tied to their AI data center projects, with Cipher set to cover $359.3 million in cost overruns at Barber Lake under revised lease terms. According to Odaily, the overrun is the first amount above the project’s original budget that Cipher will bear. Riot expects about 70% of the Rockdale project’s budget to fall under guaranteed maximum price (GMP) contracts. Core Scientific said tariffs have increased costs for some equipment and materials. Riot also said lenders are scrutinizing tenant credit, whether power infrastructure is energized, and project delivery records more closely.
