According to ChainCatcher citing Cleanview, voters in 10 states approved 38 measures restricting data centers during the U.S. midterm elections and elected several Democratic governors who support pausing construction. Newly elected governors in Ohio, Georgia, Michigan, New Mexico and Texas pledged to stop or pause data center construction statewide. Incoming governors in New York and Oregon promised to extend existing local moratoriums. Candidates who support pauses were leading in Alaska and Kansas, but results were not yet official. Cleanview estimates that about 40% of planned U.S. data center capacity is slated for these states. Another 46 local ballot measures have passed or are expected to pass, potentially hindering development; at least 17 directly prohibit large data centers.
