IG Group: BoE Vote and Guidance to Shape December Rate-Hike Expectations

According to Jin10, IG Group Chief Market Analyst Chris Beauchamp said markets have largely priced in a Bank of England rate hike, so attention may shift to divisions in the Monetary Policy Committee vote and whether the move is a one-off adjustment or the start of a new tightening cycle. Markets will scrutinize revised inflation and economic growth forecasts, particularly the Bank of England’s assessment of how long the energy shock will last and whether it acknowledges the potential economic growth costs of further tightening. The European Central Bank, Federal Reserve and Reserve Bank of New Zealand have all recently held rates unchanged; if the Bank of England raises rates, its stance would appear more hawkish by comparison. The Bank of England’s Chief Economist, Hugh Pill, will address businesses on November 6, offering markets another opportunity to interpret the meeting minutes and clarify policy signals.
