Blumenthal Calls For Objective Review Of AI Products Before Deployment

According to CNBC, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said new artificial intelligence products should face some form of objective review before release and argued that any new regulation should be targeted to avoid hurting global competitiveness. Speaking on CNBC's "Squawk on the Street," he said the U.S. is at risk of losing control of AI, but also warned that regulation could weaken the country's AI edge. Blumenthal said China understands it needs to regulate AI because it could threaten its regime, compared AI oversight with the Food and Drug Administration's pharmaceutical model, and said Congress should delegate some responsibility to experts. He also said the U.S. should learn from social media, where algorithms are driving toxic content at children and regulators are still trying to catch up.
