Bernie Sanders Reintroduces 32-Hour Workweek Bill to Make AI Benefit Workers

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has reintroduced the 32-hour workweek bill with California Representative Mark Takano. According to Sina Finance, the proposal would cut the standard workweek for nonexempt employees from 40 hours to 32 hours, requiring employers to shorten hours or pay overtime for extra time. Sanders said the new technology’s economic gains must benefit working families, not just a small number of billionaires and corporate CEOs. The bill would also phase down the overtime threshold over at least six months after it takes effect, reaching 32 hours four years later. It would require overtime pay after more than eight hours in a day and double pay after 12 hours, while current federal law generally requires overtime only after more than 40 hours in a week.
