New York City, Other Local Governments Sue DHS Over Trump Public-Benefits Rule

According to Axios, New York City and five other Democratic-led local governments sued the Department of Homeland Security to block a new Trump administration rule that they say could push immigrants and mixed-status families away from public benefits they can legally receive. The cities and counties said the rule, which takes effect this week, gives immigration officers broader discretion to deny green cards and visas based on immigrants' use of public benefits and could deter families from using Medicaid, SNAP and housing assistance. DHS estimates more than 950,000 people might disenroll or decline to enroll in public benefits, while the plaintiffs say the effect could be larger and could also lead U.S. citizen family members to withdraw from benefit programs.
