The International Atomic Energy Agency said on September 14 in Vienna that global nuclear power installed capacity could reach as much as 1,284 gigawatts by 2060, about 3.4 times the 2025 level, according to Jiemian News. The agency said this was the sixth straight year it has raised its outlook for nuclear power growth worldwide.
Under its high-growth scenario, global nuclear power capacity is projected to reach 1,045 gigawatts by 2050. Even under its low-growth scenario, capacity is expected to rise to 696 gigawatts by 2060, nearly double the 2025 level. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said nuclear power's importance is rising as global electricity demand keeps growing, and the agency expects small modular reactors to play a larger role in future nuclear expansion.
