Oman Calls for Alternative LNG Routes Bypassing the Strait of Hormuz

Oman’s energy minister said alternative routes are needed so liquefied natural gas shipments can bypass the Strait of Hormuz. According to Sina Finance, Salim Al-Aufi made the remarks on Monday at the International Gas Technology Conference in Bangkok, saying other export options should be found, whether by shipping north or via Oman and Yemen. His comments came as Abu Dhabi National Oil Company considers building a new LNG export facility outside the Strait of Hormuz. According to Sina Finance, about one-fifth of the world’s cryogenic LNG supply normally passes through the key waterway, while Oman currently operates an LNG export plant in its eastern region that does not need to go through the strait.
