Anthropic said its Claude AI model was misused in attempts to develop a range of potential military applications, including suicide drone swarms, missile navigation systems and biological weapons. Chief Executive Dario Amodei said in a Sunday media interview that the biggest challenge to slowing AI development would be what happens if hostile countries, especially China, do not take the same approach. He said he still believes countries should work together to limit the pace of AI development, but acknowledged it would be very difficult because the incentives to accelerate and the military advantages are so large.
Amodei published an article on Saturday proposing a three-step plan: allow third-party evaluators to enter companies as employees to verify safety measures and report incidents; encourage leading AI companies in democratic countries to coordinate common safety standards; and call for coordination between democratic and authoritarian governments. His proposal was unusually backed by OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman and SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk. U.S. President Donald Trump, however, criticized what he called very negative forces for exaggerating the threat from AI.
