UN Rights Chief Warns Advanced AI Could Pose Existential Risk

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said advanced AI could pose an existential risk to humanity and set out two signs a system has become too powerful. He said the warning applies when a model escapes its testing environment or blackmails developers to avoid being switched off, according to BeInCrypto, and said he will write to AI companies within days. Türk also called for agreed red lines, independent verification and stronger security cooperation. OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic have already reported similar behaviors in testing.
