Yen Rally Through Key Level Puts 2026 High Within Reach

The yen is closing in on its strongest level this year after a break through 155 per dollar triggered stop-loss orders, putting the 152 area firmly in traders' sights, according to Bloomberg. Japan's currency strengthened as much as 0.8% to 153.16 on Tuesday after rising 1.2% overnight, bringing its gains this month to 4% and making it the best performer among Group-of-10 currencies. The rally, set in motion by an intervention push from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, appears to be gaining a life of its own, with expectations for tighter Bank of Japan policy providing fundamental support and the break through 155 adding technical momentum. A trader familiar with the transactions said the move triggered large stop-loss orders and forced options dealers to sell dollars. National Australia Bank strategist Rodrigo Catril said the overnight break of the support area clearly opens the door for the move to extend further, with dollar-yen looking prime to test the previous lows of 152.27 and 152.10. Katayama said Tuesday that Japan's stance on currencies has not shifted since it conducted joint intervention with the US, and that authorities aim to maintain an orderly FX market. There was no single catalyst for the latest gain: some traders cited thin liquidity around the US holiday, while others said the break through 155 accelerated an already-bullish move that began last week on growing BOJ rate-hike expectations and speculation over a potential shift in the Government Pension Investment Fund's asset allocation. SMBC Nikko's Rinto Maruyama said a break below 154 could trigger further unwinding and stop-losses, leaving room for more yen appreciation, though lighter positioning also gives investors scope to re-enter short-yen bets. History suggests intervention-driven rallies can fade if fundamentals stay unfavorable — the yen surrendered even larger gains after Japan's 2024 interventions. Japan's economy grew faster than initially estimated in the second quarter, but Bloomberg Economics said back-to-back moves in October, let alone three hikes before year-end, are unlikely.
