The Ethereum Foundation has published its first public roadmap outlining overall priorities through 2029, setting a goal for Ethereum L1 to achieve quantum resistance across the execution, consensus, and data layers by December 2029. According to Foresight News, the timeline is intended to align with migration schedules set by companies including Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft.
The team said it will begin with the Glamsterdam upgrade and continue subsequent upgrades at an average pace of one hard fork every 7.2 months, with full quantum resistance expected at the L* stage after five forks. It also introduced a minimum viable post-quantum milestone, J*, as an interim security measure.
The roadmap focuses on five cross-fork research areas: fast finality, post-quantum security, privacy, state, and zkEVM. The foundation said the upcoming Hegotá upgrade is not itself a post-quantum upgrade, but a key step in determining whether later quantum-resistant upgrades can proceed on schedule. Its core locked proposals are consensus-layer EIP-7805, known as FOCIL, and execution-layer EIP-8141, known as Frame Transactions.
