Indonesia has extended the closure of several airports and suspended free school meal services in some areas after volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau continued to disrupt activity. According to Sina Finance, the Transport Ministry said as many as eight airports, including Jakarta's main gateway airport, will remain closed until 9 a.m. local time on Monday.
The National Nutrition Agency separately said schools that have switched to remote classes will suspend free school meals from Monday. Mount Anak Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, has been active since early July, with eruptive activity intensifying on Friday night.
According to the meteorological agency website, volcanic ash was still detected at 7 a.m. on Monday in parts of Jakarta, Banten and West Java, as well as around Lampung, Bengkulu and South Sumatra. The ash had already spread to those areas on Sunday.
Indonesia's busiest airport, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, is among the closures, and the impact on travel could extend beyond the capital. State operator InJourney Airports said seven airports on Java, Bali and Sumatra have been designated as alternate airports to support flight operations.
