According to Axios, the Trump administration used this week's G20 innovation summit to highlight differences between U.S. and European approaches to AI regulation, while European Commission tech chief Henna Virkkunen said the two sides are often addressing similar safety concerns through different systems. Virkkunen said U.S. safeguards are emerging through state laws and court cases rather than a broad federal law like the EU AI Act, and she said the EU should simplify its rules and make the region "easier, simpler, faster" for businesses. Axios reported that the Trump administration has developed a voluntary framework for reviewing some advanced AI models before release, including possible government access for up to 30 days, though the White House does not plan to publicly release it. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Axios that the administration reviewed its Astra model, and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said a relatively free of regulation approach is the way to go, arguing that new technologies should be default legal rather than default illegal.
