Trump Hints US May Not Back UK In Falklands Dispute With Argentina

According to the BBC, Donald Trump said he would not necessarily come to the UK's aid in a future conflict with Argentina over the Falkland Islands, and repeated that he is reviewing Washington's position on the territory's sovereignty. He made the comments in an interview with GB News after previously saying the US could revise its neutral stance if Britain did not raise defense spending. Trump also said Britain had not helped the US in its war with Iran, though he later said the American military did not need support. He said then-Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told him no vessels were available when he asked why the UK had not sent ships. Argentina's President Javier Milei is due to make a televised statement on Thursday night about what he calls his country's historic claim to the islands. The Falklands have been disputed by Britain and Argentina for more than 40 years, and a 1982 war left 255 British military personnel, three islanders and 649 Argentine military personnel dead. Previous US administrations have recognized Britain's de facto administration of the islands but have not taken a formal position on sovereignty. The UK government said Falkland islanders are British and have the right to determine their own future.
