According to CNBC, Tesla teased its Robotaxi business on X with posts referencing its forthcoming Cybercab driverless vehicles, including the phrases "no steering wheel, no pedals" and "try it out" in Austin, Texas, as CEO Elon Musk pinned a post saying, "A storm of Cybercabs." The comments came ahead of a planned event in Austin on Thursday, where Tesla is expected to share more Cybercab details.
Tesla designed the Cybercab as a driverless two-seater with butterfly doors and said it will have no steering wheel or pedals. The company has been testing a version of the "purpose-built" robotaxi with human drivers and traditional controls in multiple U.S. markets. New Street Research analyst Pierre Ferragu and Tesla fans also posted video clips on Wednesday showing Cybercab vehicles circulating on public streets in Austin without a steering wheel or driver.
A Tesla Robotaxi tracker estimates the company had just over 200 vehicles in its U.S. fleet registered as "unsupervised" as of Wednesday, while Tesla had 45 Cybercab vehicles authorized for driverless operations in Texas out of 420 vehicles registered in the state. Morgan Stanley analysts said Tesla shares could regain momentum if the event includes a meaningful rollout of unsupervised vehicles, but they said the reaction could be muted or negative if it underwhelms. Tesla shares are down about 21% this year as of Wednesday's close.
