According to the BBC, Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile has been charged with treason after being arrested on Thursday following a deadly raid by the authorities. His lawyer, Milner Katolo, said 17 others, including Mundubile's running mate Makebi Zulu, were also charged.
Mundubile had disputed the results of Zambia's recent presidential election, in which official results showed incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema won a second term with 60% of the vote to Mundubile's 38% on 13 August. After the poll, security forces raided a property in Lusaka linked to Mundubile, killing a former cabinet minister and arresting several other politicians. Mundubile and Zulu later took refuge at a United Nations building in the capital before being detained after pressure from the president on the UN to hand them over. Hichilema is due to be sworn in for a second term on 1 September.
