Matt Lucas and Hugh Bonneville Back Law on AI Voice Cloning

More than 80 performers, including Matt Lucas, Hugh Bonneville and Nicola Coughlan, have written to the UK government calling for legislation that would give every person a legal right to own their voice, according to BBC. The letter says AI voice cloning is being used without consent and that existing law does not adequately protect performers from voice theft. Audiobook narrator Alice Sockett, who co-founded the campaign, called it an existential threat to the industry. A government spokesperson said digital replicas can be useful for creative industries but can also cause harm, and said the government will launch a consultation on how to address those harms while protecting legitimate innovation.
