Thailand central bank Governor Vitai Ratanakorn said restrictions on gold trading have weakened gold's impact on the baht and may be tightened further if needed. According to Sina Finance, the Bank of Thailand set a 50 million baht daily cap in March on online gold trading per person and encouraged large investors to settle transactions in U.S. dollars rather than baht. Vitai Ratanakorn said the cap could be lowered to 30 million baht or less if necessary. As part of broader efforts to curb illegal capital flows, authorities are stepping up scrutiny of gold trading and working to tighten controls on cash payments, cash deposits, and exchanges related to gold purchases.
