The European Commission said on June 25 that it has preliminarily concluded Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure should be designated as “gatekeepers” under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), and has formally notified both companies, according to 36Kr. The Commission said AWS and Azure are the EU’s largest and second-largest cloud computing services, respectively, and serve as important gateways for businesses to reach customers, even though neither meets the DMA’s quantitative thresholds for designation. The Commission launched a market investigation into Amazon’s and Microsoft’s cloud services on November 18, 2025; both companies have already been designated as DMA gatekeepers for other services. If their cloud services are also brought under the DMA, the scope of their compliance obligations in the EU would expand.
