Ian Harper, a member of the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) monetary policy committee, noted that Australia's long-term inflation expectations have slightly increased. According to Jin10, financial markets currently anticipate that consumer prices will remain above the RBA's target for an extended period, marking a significant shift not seen in years. Harper made these remarks on Tuesday during an event hosted by the Australian Economic Development Committee in Melbourne. He emphasized the importance of inflation expectations, stating, "Inflation expectations matter, and there is concern about the long-term outlook. If there is a risk of long-term inflation expectations becoming unanchored, as we say, then strong action is needed." Harper is one of the nine members of the RBA's monetary policy committee, which votes on interest rate decisions. This was his first speech since assuming the role.
