A 2023 cryptocurrency-related kidnapping case has seen significant developments, according to Foresight News. French law enforcement has uncovered a transnational money laundering network involving multiple countries and crypto wallets while investigating a €1.7 million ransom payment. The victim in this case was the father of "TeufeurS," a well-known crypto gambling influencer. The kidnappers threatened the victim's family via text messages, demanding the ransom in cryptocurrency. Ultimately, TeufeurS transferred a total of €1.7 million to the kidnappers' specified wallets in two transactions, leading to his father's release.
The investigation revealed that part of the ransom was transferred through multiple layers before ending up in wallet accounts controlled by foreign nationals. French gendarmes successfully traced $131,000 of the funds, which led to a crypto wallet controlled by a Venezuelan national. The case further exposed the complex chain of cross-border crypto asset transfers, anonymous wallets, and overseas platforms used by criminal organizations for money laundering.
This case is considered a significant example of kidnapping and extortion in the European crypto industry and may serve as an early model for several similar cases targeting cryptocurrency professionals in France and Europe by 2025.
