UK Long-Term Bond Yields Set for Largest Decline in Over Two Years

UK long-term bond yields are poised for their largest decline in over two years after starting the week at their highest level in nearly three decades. According to Jin10, recent political instability and concerns over increased government bond issuance had previously impacted the bond market. However, hopes for an agreement between the United States and Iran have alleviated energy price pressures and reignited bets on fewer interest rate hikes. As a result, the yield on UK 30-year bonds is expected to drop more than 0.25 percentage points this week, marking the largest decline among G7 sovereign bonds. On Friday, the yield fell by 5 basis points to around 5.59%. Barclays strategist Moyeen Islam noted that as the market continues to focus on widely discussed fiscal and inflation risks in the UK, market positioning has become increasingly important. However, further increases in long-term yields would require more 'bad news.' This week, UK inflation data came in below expectations, coupled with poor employment and retail data, which has reduced market expectations for rate hikes, thereby boosting bond prices.
