UK Retailers Offer Discounts Amid Geopolitical Tensions, BRC Reports

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) reported that the annual rate of the BRC shop price index decreased from 1.2% in March to 1% in April. Food inflation fell from 3.4% to 3.1% over the same period, while non-food item prices saw a year-on-year decline of 0.1%, reversing the 0.1% inflation increase observed in March. Helen Dickinson, CEO of the BRC, noted that retailers have intensified price competition to encourage more spring purchases amid weakening consumer confidence. She mentioned, "While we have not yet seen the full impact of Middle Eastern conflicts on consumer prices, this effect is expected to become apparent soon."
