Tron founder Justin Sun recounted at the Inside the Blockchain 100 event at Binance Square that the partnership bringing USDT to the Tron blockchain originated from a personal mishap: he lost approximately $50,000 worth of USDT after mistakenly withdrawing the tokens to a standard Bitcoin wallet, at a time when USDT was issued on the Bitcoin chain via the Omni protocol and incompatible with ordinary Bitcoin addresses. Sun subsequently contacted Tether directly, proposing that USDT be issued natively on the Tron network, citing faster settlement, lower fees, and reduced transfer errors. He said some exchange operators were initially reluctant, but technical staff at those firms recognized the merits and eventually drove adoption.
