At the Web3 Carnival in Hong Kong, Vitalik Buterin stated that the two core functions of the Ethereum protocol are as a public bulletin board and as a shared digital object. The value of decentralized applications lies in ensuring autonomy, security, verifiability, fair participation, and user aggregation. The four-year roadmap includes short-term scaling, the launch of ZKVM to support more complex computations, early preparations for post-quantum cryptography, and account abstraction to support smart contract wallets and quantum-resistant signatures. The long-term goal is to maximize secure consensus, formal verification, extreme simplicity, and quantum security. Final determinism will be achieved within 1 to 3 slots, and ZKVM will support device verification for mobile phones and other devices, with the goal of achieving large-scale scaling by 2028. Ethereum's goal is to become the most secure and decentralized chain.
