According to Axios, Trump is seeking to form a multinational coalition to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and plans to announce it later this week. Four sources revealed that if the blockade of oil tanker traffic in the Persian Gulf continues, Trump is also considering seizing Kharg Island, a key Iranian oil transshipment point, a move that would require the intervention of US ground troops. Iran currently blocks oil exports from Gulf states while allowing tankers carrying Iranian crude oil free passage. Trump stated on Truth Social on Saturday that the US and several other countries would send warships to the Persian Gulf and called on China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK to participate. On Sunday, aboard Air Force One, he said the US was negotiating with seven countries, some of which had already declined to participate. The White House calls the plan the "Alliance of Hormuz," and no country has yet publicly committed to joining, but senior officials say they expect countries to announce their support this week. Trump discussed the plan with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday and warned NATO allies that a lack of response would negatively impact NATO's future. Regarding Kharg Island, located about 15 miles off the coast of Iran, it handles approximately 90% of Iran's crude oil exports. Trump ordered strikes on Friday against military facilities on the island, but not oil facilities. U.S. officials said seizing the island would constitute an economic blow to the Iranian regime, but could also trigger retaliatory attacks by Iran against oil facilities in the Gulf states.
