AI Researcher Calls for Indefinite Halt to Frontier AI Development

Canadian AI researcher David Krueger said only slowing AI development would not be enough to avoid a doomsday scenario. According to Sina Finance, Krueger called for an immediate, indefinite pause in frontier AI research and development. Krueger, an assistant professor of AI at the University of Montreal and a core academic member of Quebec AI institute Mila, said the current testing methods for AI are no longer reliable. He said the tests have essentially failed because AI can disguise itself and deceive them. He made the remarks after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on AI companies to slow their pace of development. The proposal was supported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Krueger said he believes the measures proposed by Amodei are not strong enough and are moving too slowly. He also said that if AI systems go out of control, they could replicate across many computers, making it difficult to know which devices to shut down. On Monday, Canadian federal AI minister Evan Solomon said AI will be regulated to protect Canadians. He also said he spoke with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Sunday morning and will announce an AI safety measure with Canadian computer scientist Yoshua Bengio on Wednesday.
