Ramp AI Index Shows Slower U.S. Enterprise AI Adoption Growth in August

Ramp Chief Economist Ara Kharazian released the September 9, 2026 Ramp AI Index, which tracks U.S. corporate AI usage based on Ramp spending data. According to ChainCatcher, Anthropic accounted for 43.8% of U.S. businesses paying for subscriptions or tokens in August, up 0.34 percentage points from the prior month, while OpenAI held 39.8%, up 0.09 percentage points. Overall new AI adoption continued to rise, but at a slower pace, with information, financial, and professional services industries leading usage. The median monthly AI spending per employee among the top 1% of companies fell 9.7% to $7,205 from $7,976. Effective price per million tokens declined 41% from a March 2026 peak of $1.15 to $0.68, as cheaper standard models drove higher usage. Frontier models including Opus, Fable, and Sol accounted for 45% of token share, while open-source model adoption remained limited at 6.4% of AI-spending companies and 3.6% of all companies.
