Lenovo’s x86 Server Bet Finally Pays Off as ISG Revenue Jumps 98%

Lenovo’s Infrastructure Solutions Group, which includes its x86 server business, posted 98% revenue growth and $777 million in operating profit in the second quarter, according to Jiemian News. The article says the business has become Lenovo’s fastest-growing unit and one of its most profitable, after years of losses following Lenovo’s $2.3 billion acquisition of IBM’s x86 server business. Jiemian News said Lenovo’s x86 server market share rose from about 5% to about 15% after the deal, making it one of the world’s top three vendors at one point. It added that the server business did not turn profitable on a full-year basis until 2022, while IBM’s infrastructure business fell 7% year on year to $3.8 billion in the latest quarter. Lenovo’s AI server pipeline reached $54 billion, up 157% quarter on quarter, and the company said its second-quarter capital expenditure was $374 million.
