Bitcoin may be a better hard asset than gold, according to a correlation study. Both have been rising as concerns about the fiscal health of advanced-economy governments dominate market sentiment, pushing bond yields — market-implied borrowing costs — higher. The Bitcoin-Gold Correlation Is at Its Highest Since 2020The 90-day correlation coefficient between Bitcoin and gold's daily returns stands at 0.59, per TradingView and CoinDesk data. That is the highest since 2020, when central banks and governments were printing money to cushion the economy through the pandemic. The parallel to 2020 is instructive. Both periods feature large-scale fiscal expansion and doubts about the durability of government balance sheets — the conditions under which assets outside the fiat system trade together rather than as independent stories.Bitcoin's Yield Correlation Is −0.17 Against Gold's −0.41The distinction lies in each asset's relationship with the US 10-year Treasury yield.A rising bond yield is typically a headwind for assets like gold and Bitcoin, which sit in portfolios without generating cash flow. Higher risk-free returns raise the opportunity cost of holding them.Bitcoin's correlation with the 10-year is just −0.17 — meaning a rising yield barely has a negative impact. Gold's is −0.41, a slightly more meaningful negative relationship.Bitcoin is less tethered to bond-market forces. That does not make it safe, but it suggests better positioning to decouple from yield-driven headwinds. The Divergence Showed Up in Live Trading Last WeekThe correlation figures have a recent real-world test.Gold fell from $4,700 an ounce to $4,300 in less than a week while the 10-year climbed above 4.81% and WTI topped $90. Bitcoin held choppy between $76,000 and $80,000 through the same stretch, then cleared $80,000 with yields still elevated. That is roughly what a −0.17 versus −0.41 spread predicts. Gold moved with the yield. Bitcoin largely did not.The same pattern repeated after August payrolls printed 162,000 against a 56,000 forecast. The two-year Treasury yield hit a 52-week high near 4.4% and equities sold the print. Bitcoin held within 1% of flat.Fiscal-Driven Yields May Explain the Weaker TetherThe correlation gap has a plausible mechanism, and it turns on why yields are rising. When yields climb on growth, the opportunity-cost logic applies cleanly to both assets. When they climb on fiscal deterioration, the same investors demanding more compensation to hold government paper are the ones seeking assets outside that system.Mohamed El-Erian told CNBC at the Ambrosetti Forum he sees no appetite for immediate US fiscal consolidation and expects continued upward pressure on yields. That is the fiscal case, not the growth case.Long-dated sovereign yields have hit multi-decade highs simultaneously across the US, Japan, Germany and France, with Japan's 10-year touching 3% for the first time in three decades. US debt approached $40 trillion in August. BlackRock has cited US fiscal issues as a bullish tailwind for both Bitcoin and gold. Why Bitcoin captures more of that flow than gold is harder to establish from correlation data alone. One candidate is that gold has a longer history as a rates-sensitive asset with deep institutional positioning tied to real-yield models, while Bitcoin's marginal buyer is less likely to be running those models at all. What the Correlation Does Not SettleTwo caveats belong alongside the figures.Correlation coefficients describe a 90-day window and can shift. The Bitcoin-gold reading of 0.59 is the highest since 2020 precisely because it was lower before — these are not structural constants. And the dollar remains the variable that has bitten. The Dollar Index has been hovering near a bullish trendline drawn from the 2011 lows, and Bitcoin has historically had an inverse relationship with the greenback. A firm dollar has done more visible damage to Bitcoin in recent sessions than rising yields have. The takeaway is narrower than "Bitcoin is a better hard asset." It is that Bitcoin's yield sensitivity is materially lower than gold's, which matters specifically in an environment where yields are rising on fiscal rather than growth concerns — and where that environment persists.
