AI TRENDS | Tech Leaders at G20 Focus on AI Growth, Jobs, and Data Centers

Global policymakers, tech executives, and business leaders gathered in Chapel Hill on Wednesday for the second day of the G20 Innovation Ministerial Meeting, where they discussed artificial intelligence, economic growth, and the challenges of supporting AI's rapid expansion. According to Sina Finance, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Chapel Hill is significant because it sits at the core of the Research Triangle, supported by top universities, advanced manufacturing, technology industries, skilled labor, and public and private investment. Artificial intelligence remained the central topic, with participants discussing how governments and companies can address regulation, cybersecurity, labor shortages, and rising power demand. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said countries may take different approaches to AI regulation and deployment, but the technology's economic potential makes adoption unavoidable. Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown said the world is witnessing an unprecedented wave of industrial construction, even larger than 19th-century railroad building. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also urged countries to invest in AI infrastructure, saying AI itself is infrastructure and that every country needs to build related systems to support its domestic economy. As the discussions continued, data center proposals in several North Carolina areas, including the Research Triangle, remained a source of public controversy. Supporters said data centers are key to AI development and economic growth, while opponents raised concerns about environmental impact and power consumption. AI's effect on employment was another major topic. A Gallup poll showed that 79% of Americans believe artificial intelligence will reduce jobs over the next decade, while only 6% think it will create more employment opportunities. Tech executives at the meeting argued that AI is already driving hiring across multiple industries, especially in infrastructure-related fields. In a conversation with Lutnick, Huang said AI investment is creating large numbers of jobs across sectors, from chip fabs and computer factories to AI compute factories, and that the company plans to invest nearly $1 trillion in U.S. infrastructure this year. Altman added that he believes AI will usher in the biggest boom in global entrepreneurship and small-business development in history. Beyond the private sector, government agencies are also using AI, and OpenAI has launched a pilot project with the North Carolina Department of Commerce focused on rebuilding and economic recovery in communities hit by Hurricane Helene. The company is also working with the state's treasurer's office on unclaimed property matters.
