Barclays: SK Hynix U.S. Listing Could Support the South Korean Won in the Near Term

Barclays said a potential U.S. listing by SK Hynix could provide some near-term support for the South Korean won. According to Jin10, Barclays analysts wrote in a report that part of the support could come from hedging activity, as well as from eventually converting part of the fundraising proceeds into won for domestic investment. The analysts said the won’s recent rise suggested that some pre-hedging activity had already been reflected in prices. They added that if South Korean semiconductor companies in the future fund a sizable share of their domestic investment by repatriating offshore assets or overseas earnings, it would create additional demand for the won and support the currency.
